Asava Dance with Bennie Maupin Live
Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 8:00 PM (PST)
Exit from the Blue Room is the current collaboration between composer Bennie Maupin and choreographer Seonagh Odhiambo of Asava Dance. The evening of dance is performed to live music, with an ensemble led by Maupin, legendary bass clarinetist of Miles Davis’ classic, Bitches Brew. Maupin draws from his observations of the dancers to compose an original score.
Appreciating the weave between dance and music in live collaboration, the choreographer works with a fusion of modern techniques, African influences, and powerful gestures. The dancers dig into the theme of oppression as it connects to both jazz history and everyday life. The result is an emphasis on positive transformations—strength and beauty that, like jazz music, arise out of painful circumstances.
Musicians Lindsey Hundley, Danny Alfaro and dancers Lorrin Hilton, Lindsey Lollie and Kimberley Michelle Smith each contribute their artistry to this venture. Costumes designed by Carole Lung
